Tuesday January 28th, 2020

  • This morning students explored how many different shapes they could make using 16 lines.  They had to find the perimeter and area for each shape and determine if those change as the shapes change?
  • We helped the kindergarten class during their gym time today. 
  • Students started the 'journalism' role by transferring their understanding of the planets by using the information from their inverted triangles to create a news article.  This work will continue ...
  • The Solar System bulletin board is coming along and we are just adding some final touches.  The Moonscape has a few craters and looks great.  
  • We read Malala today and have reached the part of the book titled "Finding my Voice."
  • Groups continued planning how they will present their information about their planet to the class.

Monday January 27th, 2020

  • We explored how many different shapes students can make using 24 units as the perimeter.
  • Continuation of the visual vocabulary went by quickly today.  Students are creating a "word wall" based on Space Science vocabulary.
  • Students continued organizing information about their planet into an inverted triangle and will be taking on the role of a "journalist" by writing a news article.
  • A few of our planets were put up on the bulletin board today and our moonscape now has a few craters.  Specifically the 'Tycho Crater'
  • We read Malala today and have reached the part of the book titled "Finding my Voice."
  • Groups started planning how they will present their information about their planet to the class.
  • We ended the day talking about everyday being "Literacy Day" and Mrs. Wagenblast shared a few of her favourite picture books.  Students voted on a book to read.

  • Students have become "experts" researching events that would make the news regarding the planet they are learning about.  They are organizing the information into an inverted triangle and will be taking on the role of a "journalist."
  • Creating the Solar System and molding our classroom 'moonscape' was an exciting part of our day yesterday and today.
  • We will be building a moonscape in our classroom.  It is not necessary, but if you are able, please bring in some salt clay to help us create the surface of the moon.  The recipe is below.  Please put it in a plastic bag or container so that it does not dry out and bring it to school.  Thank you!!!

  • Students continued researching today.  Some finished up researching their planet while others started researching the moon using the NASA Science for kids website.
  • Students had regular gym and music today and were gifted an "extra gym"
  • We had a visit from Constable Gemma today and she gave us some homework.  Students need to 1.  Learn their address and 2. Memorize the phone number of an adult (parents/aunt/uncle/grandparents).

  • We will be building a moonscape in our classroom.  It is not necessary, but if you are able, please bring in some salt clay on Thursday to help us create the surface of the moon.  The recipe is below.  Ms. Steeves made some at home, she did not need to use the whole half cup of water and did not need to knead it for 10 minutes.  Please put it in a plastic bag or container so that it does not dry out and bring it to school.  Thank you!!!

  • In Math, students showed their understanding of “Factor Trees” using markers on the windows, tables and benches. We also did a “math gallery walk” and added to others thinking. 


  • Students had their final day researching their planets.
  • Students started brainstorming ideas for our Bulletin Board and “Moonscape.”
  • We started planning a news article about our planet with our group and will transfer that information into the inverted triangle.

  • We had Gym and Music today
  • We continued reading the book, "I Am Malala"
  • We have been recording the Phases of the Moon and gathering data.
  • Researching the Planets - Students have been organized into "space agency" groups and will become "experts" about their planets.
  • We looked at the following pictures about Canada and Australia.  Students showed how this represents the Reasons for Seasons and showed their understanding by working in groups using a globe and a flashlight.  Afterwards, they started creating a visual journal page showing their understanding about seasons. 
  • We had a lock down today.  Students did a great job.

  • In Math, students wrote about the "Factors" for the following numbers and the colours that corresponded. 
  • We read Chapter 2 & 3 which were titled, "Dreams" and "A Magic Pencil."  What would you draw with your "magic pencil" to improve the world around you?  
  • We continued our Visual Vocabulary of "Space Words" researching the meaning of the words.
  • Students continued reading the article about drones and answering the questions to show the understanding of what they read.
  • Our day ended again with the provocation “Dare to Dream."  The focus was on the final launch from "October Sky."  Discussions in small groups and as a large group were based upon the following: How to be resilient, How do you follow your dreams against the odds?, What questions would you research if you were picked to colonize the moon?, and What would you need for survival?

  • We had a busy start to our day (gym, music, helping our buddies with computers, new table groups)
  • In Math, we quickly discussed predictions for what number 21 would look like.  This work will continue tomorrow. 
  • We read Chapter 1 which was titled, "As Free as a Bird."  Lots of deep questions and connections were made and powerful conversation.
  • We started our Visual Vocabulary of "Space Words" predicting the meaning of a few selected words.  We brainstormed ways that we can learn words and remember them.  The class came up with some great ideas! 
  • Our day ended with the provocation “Dare to Dream.”  The focus was on teamwork and relying on people to help reach dreams.  We also discussed how working together requires acceptance and how we accept others.  Students observed how Homer and his friends needed Quentin in order to start the process of launching a rocket from the film, "October Sky."

  • Happy New Year & Welcome Back!!!
  • We had a busy start to our day (sharing about the break, music, gym)
  • In Math, we were introduced to the following picture and had to work in our groups to uncover the “secret code” and meaning behind the numbers and colours. 
  • We started our next book, “I Am Malala” 

  • Our day ended with a provocation titled, “Dare to Dream” to spark some excitement about our learning for the next few months.  A brief introduction to Sputnik from clips from the film, “October Sky” which inspired “Homer’s” dream - Students started the process of thinking like Scientists and Journalists. NASA’a big question: Are You Ready??? will be explored over the next few months!  We will continue the provocation tomorrow.
